Molecular Gas Depletion and Starbursts in Luminous Infrared Galaxy Mergers
نویسندگان
چکیده
Most luminous infrared galaxies (LIGs) are closely interacting/merging systems rich in molecular gas. We study here the relationship between the stage of the galaxy-galaxy interactions, the molecular gas mass, and the star formation rate as deduced from the infrared luminosity LIR in LIGs. We find a correlation between the CO(1-0) luminosity (a measure of molecular mass M(H2)) and the projected separation of merger nuclei (indicator of merging stages) in a sample of 50 LIG mergers, which shows that the molecular gas content decreases as merging advances. The starburst is due to enhanced star formation in pre–existing molecular clouds and not to the formation of more molecular clouds from HI. The molecular content is being rapidly depleted due to the starbursts as merging progresses. This is further supported by an anti-correlation between LIR/M(H2), the global measure of the star formation rate per unit gas mass, and the projected separation implying an enhanced star formation “efficiency” in late stage mergers compared to that of early mergers. This is the first evidence connecting the depletion of molecular gas with starbursts in interacting galaxies. متن کاملStarbursts and AGN in Luminous Infrared Galaxies
Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs), which emit a significant fraction of their bolometric luminosity in the far-infrared, have LIR ≥ 10L⊙. LIRGs are a mixture of single galaxies, disk galaxy pairs, interacting systems, and advanced mergers which exhibit enhanced star-formation rates and AGN activity compared to normal galaxies. At the highest luminosities (LIR ≥ 10L⊙), Ultraluminous Infrared Ga...

Ultraluminous galaxies in the local universe (z≤0.2) emit the bulk of their energy in the mid and far-infrared. The multiwavelength approach to these objects has shown that they are advanced mergers of gas-rich spiral galaxies. Galaxy-galaxy collisions took place on all cosmological time-scales, and nearby mergers serve as local analogs to gain insight into the physical processes that lead to t...

We present some highlights from the mid-infrared (5-16 μm) images of mergers of massive galaxies obtained with the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). We have observed: 1) ultraluminous infrared nuclei, 2) luminous dust-enshrouded extranuclear starbursts, and 3) active galaxy nuclei (AGNs). In this contribution we discuss the observations of Arp 299, a prototype for very luminous infrared galaxie...

A total of 19 luminous infrared galaxy mergers , with L IR > ∼ 2 × 10 11 L ⊙ , for H 0 = 75 km s −1 Mpc −1 , have been observed in the H i line at Nançay and four of them were observed at Arecibo as well. Of these 19, ten had not been observed before. Six were clearly detected , one of which for the first time. The objective was to statistically sample the H i gas mass in luminous in-frared mer...
